    Containers, Kubernetes and Google Cloud
    Speaker: Thomas Lichtenstein (Google Cloud)
    + learn more
    Breakout - Application Development
Creating a single microservice is a well understood problem. Creating a cluster of load-balanced microservices that are resilient and self-healing is not so easy. Managing that cluster with rollouts and rollbacks, scaling individual services on demand, securely sharing secrets and configuration among services is even harder. Kubernetes, an open-source container management system, can help with this. In this talk, we will start with a simple microservice, containerize it using Docker, and scale it to a cluster of resilient microservices managed by Kubernetes. Along the way, we will learn what makes Kubernetes a great system for automating deployment, operations, and scaling of containerized applications.
Speaker: Thomas Lichtenstein - Google Cloud Customer Engineer
    Breakout - Application Development
Introduction of Relational Database Service Cloud Spanner
    Speaker: Tom Grey (Google Cloud)
    + learn more
Breakout - Big Data & Machine Learning
For many years, organisations have relied on the strong consistency guarantees made by traditional relational databases, but have struggled to scale these systems to the global footprint and data volumes needed by modern digital businesses. Such challenges internally lead Google to develop Spanner, a database that provides the consistency and predictability of traditional databases, but with the powerful scaling characteristics of modern NoSql and NewSql data stores. In this session, we will lift the hood on the Spanner technology, demonstrate the issues it solves, and explain how it pushes the limitations of the famous CAP theorem that has constrained so many alternatives before.
Speaker: Tom Grey - Google Head of Solution Architecture, EMEA
Breakout - Big Data & Machine Learning

    Speaker: Rokesh Jankie (Google Cloud)
    + learn more
    Breakout - Infrastructure & Operations
For those who use popular open source data processing tools like Apache Spark and Hadoop, there can be several steps involved before being able to really focus on the data itself: creating a cluster to use the open source tools, finding a software package to easily install and manage the tools, then finding people to create jobs and applications and to operate, maintain and scale your clusters. In this session, you'll learn how you can use Google Cloud's managed Spark and Hadoop service, Google Cloud Dataproc, to take advantage of your existing investments in Spark and Hadoop. You'll have the opportunity to see how easily your existing data and code can be migrated to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and how within Cloud Dataproc clusters can be right-sized, run ephemerally and cleanly separated to maximize your invested resources.Abstract

    Breakout - Application Development
Migrating a brown field infrastructure with stateless and stateful applications to self-healing containers is a challenging project. Kubernetes provides solid repeatable building blocks to unify the lifecycle of those applications. Together with container-aware monitoring and continuous delivery pipelines the gap between high requirements for agility and performance can be closed - without sacrificing availability and security. In this talk we will show how we helped a traffic-intensive marketing data platform with its migration to the Google Cloud Platform and Kubernetes. The project follows the concept of shared responsibility. This includes leveraging on managed services like central logging and cloud-databases to help the migration team focus primarily on their applications.
